[ Persona 4 Arena Ultimax; Episode P3 Playthrough ]
Because ArcSys and Atlus apparently hate me, the exact details of Persona 4 Arena's story mode differ greatly depending on which character you choose to tackle it with. For the sake of simplifying things and potential future castmate CR, I play Labrys with the assumption that P4 Arena happened following Yu Narukami's story mode, but her brief encounters with the rest of the Investigation Team still happened as she was running around the TV World as Miss President (as many of them mention running into her during various story modes, even when they're not the heroes).
Personality: When the player first encounters Labrys during the story mode of Persona 4 Arena, she is not... entirely herself and remains that way for a good chunk of the game. She's identified as "Miss President", presenting and believing herself to be the newly elected Student Council President of Yasogami High and a perfectly normal high school girl. In this guise, Labrys is every inch the kind of girl who would be elected the Student Council President of any highschool -- a stickler for following the rules and living up to her title, as "Miss President", she's a strict, brave and responsible girl who isn't afraid to charge headfirst into things in the name of upholding school policy. Despite citing herself as nothing special in particular, she does her best as the council president, as she believes it's a way of repaying the students who voted for her -- and those who have faith in her to do her duty.
But under the hardy surface of "Miss President" lies a far more troubled heart. We see quick peeks of this occasionally -- she is deeply troubled by the P1 Grand Prix and expresses distress at the idea of friends being forced to fight each other and confusion over the fact that the Investigation Team's bond remains as strong as ever, despite the conflict -- at one point she even outright asks what it would be like if the group were forced to kill one another, further hinting at the conflict she is keeping hidden under the surface. She has no memories of herself outside of being the Student Council President -- but she's so caught up in her role that she only realizes this once she's forced to confront it (when the hero of that story mode route asks her name, for example). Her reactions vary from route to route -- in Yu's case, she lashes out and flees in confusion and fear, while in Yukiko's, she reacts with the same emotions but is quickly calmed and reassured by the other girl. And it is only when Shadow Labrys forcibly breaks the illusion of "Miss President" (directly or indirectly, depending on the route) that we see the true core of Labrys and her heart.
Labrys is, more than anything, a girl who wants to be understood and ultimately accepted but struggles first and foremost with accepting herself. She wishes with all her heart to be normal and to live a happy life and most of all, to have someone understand and acknowledge the pain she went through when forced to kill her sister units -- just as the researchers in the lab refused to do. And by the time she's thrown into the TV world in the beginning of Arena, her guilt over destroying her 'sisters' -- especially Unit 24, her closest friend -- causes her to be knee deep in serious self-loathing. She yearns for a place to belong, a place where she can be free of fear and pain and simply be. This desire and the suffering caused by her life in the lab is so intense that when she is given an opportunity to let go of those painful memories and "become human", she not only accepts it but wholeheartedly but embraces it so intensely that she only lets go of this illusion when it is impossible for her to reconcile her delusion with the reality of who she is and depending on the route, her reaction upon this realization ranges from shock and terror to sheer unadulterated horror and disgust -- in Chie's route in particular, she screams for the trio gathered in the announcement room not to look at her.
It is all of these fears and all of this pain, mixed with her fear that finding a place in the world and being understood by anyone -- let alone humans -- is ultimately impossible ("No human can understand my suffering!") are what spawn Shadow Labrys, who twists all these feelings into a desire to see humans suffer as she was forced to suffer. She sets up the P1 Grand Prix to make this happen, but simple sadism is not the real emotion that drives her goals -- it is Labrys' desire to be understood that ultimately results in the P1 Grand Prix. After all, if she forces friends to fight like she was made to, then they'll understand and accept her, right? Other people should suffer as Labrys was made to suffer, right? But Labrys herself doesn't get off easy, either -- not only is she on the receiving end of much of her Shadow self's scorn and mocking, but 'General Teddie' and 'Rise' (both Shadow Labrys in disguise) even attempt to injure or even kill her during some of the story mode routes, further exemplifying Labrys' self-loathing.
Even once everything is over and Labrys has accepted her Shadow, there are still traces of the guilt left lingering in her heart -- not just for what she did to her sister units, but for dragging all those involved into the P1 Grand Prix. When she first meets Aigis, she's quick to assume that she'll be locked up again and seems genuinely surprised when that isn't the case -- and when her new friends are so delighted for her.
With the dust settling, this also gives us the chance to see who Labrys really is without the stress of her Shadow's plot driving her -- and she proves near-immediately that "Miss President" hadn't been quite as fabricated as it first appeared. She's just as brave and responsible as her alter ego had been, deciding to work with Mitsuru and the Shadow Operatives in order to repay everyone for having her back during the whole mess -- just as "Miss President" had wanted to work hard in order to repay the students' faith in her. She's also quite a curious girl, eager to learn more about the world around her and the things that fill it -- though this has been an evident part of her personality ever since she was activated.
With Ultimax comes further insight into Labrys' mindset following her awakening and despite making slow, staggering steps towards herself for who (and what) she is, Labrys is still struggling with her self-image, especially when it comes to how she's perceived by humans. She's notably shy and awkward when she meets new people and this is particularly obvious when she meets Ken and Yukari. Though she never expresses the fear in as many words, she i worried that they will judge her because of their differences or find it hard to trust her because they haven't known each other very long. She's admittedly envious of the bond that the Shadow Operatives share, calling them "radiant to [her] eyes" as she reads over the incident report of the events of Persona 3.
As such, she seems both surprised and incredibly pleased when she realized that Ken and Yukari not only treat her no different than they would another human, but they immediately trust her and treat her as a valued comrade -- just as she's always wanted to be treated. While she's happy to realize this, her acceptance of it is understandably shaky -- while she knows perfectly well that the Shadow Yu that approaches her at the gates of Yasogami is a fake, his words still rattle her enough that she's filled with doubt all over again and struggles to truly shake it until the conclusion of episode P3.
But even through all her doubts, the real texture of Labrys' heart shines through -- she continues to prove herself as a kind, brave and compassionate girl who empathizes with those who are in pain. She constantly worries about the safety and well-being of others, even those who she should consider to be her enemies -- near the end of episode P3, she's utterly heartbroken by the pain Sho is suffering and earlier expresses relief that Adachi is still alive, despite knowing full well who he is and what he's done. She also panics when she realizes that Sho and Adachi may have been left behind in the crumbling Yasogami-Tartarus.
As someone who's endured unimaginable pain herself, Labrys is naturally especially sensitive to the pain of others and this gives her a great deal of empathy and understanding of those who are suffering. With just a few hints of emotion radiated from his Plume of Dusk and some details of his past, she is able to come eerily close to deducing just what the feelings that tie Sho up in knots are -- and tells Mitsuru that she feels as though she and Sho are "the same", expressing a wish to save him as she was saved by the others.
Her bravery is especially on show during episode P3 -- despite her own doubts and fears, she's fiercely determined to save her friends and the world and to stop the mastermind behind the whole scheme. Despite being built first and foremost as a weapon, Labrys does not enjoy fighting, though she understands the necessity of it when it comes to protecting the things and the people that she holds dear to her. She doesn't hesitate to throw herself into the fray when the situation calls for it, even though the entire re-run of the P1 Grand Prix is a clear sore reminder of her own struggles mere days before. But she pushes on through, putting her own pain aside to keep from worrying her friends and to concentrate on fighting to save the day.
Strengths/Weaknesses: + Willpower & Determination: Labrys' willpower is absolutely phenomenal. During her story mode in Persona 4 Arena, when provoked with the threat of having her memories deleted, she is able to use 220% of her theoretical strength despite her joints only operating at 70% capacity, through sheer rage and willpower, something the scientists attending her say should be theoretically impossible for her to do.
+/- Downloaded Memories: Whenever Labrys destroyed one of her sister units, the memories and experiences that had accumilated on their Plumes of Dusk were downloaded into Labrys', which means she has a wide pool of knowledge and experience to drawn on outside of her own personal one. While she's full of knowledge of the world around her (for example, she's able to identify the types of trees on the island as she's making her escape - and the sound of the ocean - despite having no prior exposure to them) there are big gaps in this knowledge and she's often unaware that she actually knows something until the information makes itself relevant and comes to the forefront of her mind. Basically, she's a talking textbook of trivia that will probably be totally useless in Route. Oh well!
+ Bravery: Labrys is incredibly brave and will not allow fear to stop her from doing the things she believes need to be done - she will do what the situation calls for, no matter how scared she herself might be, especially if it's to protect someone or something else.
+ Combat: Labrys was designed as a weapon first and foremost and she has oodles of combat experience - she canonically takes down a newborn god, according to Episode P3. While she no longer has the advantage of her augmented body, she'll still be able to put up one hell of a fight if it comes to it. Even putting aside physical combat experience, she proves herself to be fairly good at analyzing her opponents and coming up with fairly good strategies on the fly (as seen when she correctly analyzes how to disable #024 without destroying her in her P4A Story Mode).
- Awkwardness: Due to her sheltered upbringing and her general lack of knowledge of the way the world works, Labrys is more than a little clueless when it comes to social situations. She misreads some social cues and is often unsure of how to proceed when faced with an unfamiliar situation, socially speaking and she doesn't really have much experience to take examples from. While she can muddle her way through, she's still distinctly awkward around unfamiliar people... and familiar people for that matter.
- Transparency: Labrys wears her heart on her sleeve - she's not very good at covering up how she feels and she's a terrible liar (as seen when she stumbles over telling Mitsuru that she has no idea where Sho is, despite prompting from everyone else in the Shadow Ops including Mitsuru herself). If she's trying to hide something, it won't take very much effort to find out what it is.
- Squishy Meatbag Bits: Despite wanting to be a human (and, for a short time, believing herself to be) Labrys is not at all used to the kind of feelings that having a squishy meatbag body brings with it and is likely going to be a little clumsy and uncoordinated while she tries her best to get used to it.
- Worries & Fears: Accepting your Shadow isn't a magic fix for all your problems -- so while Labrys is now aware of the things that trouble her, those troubles haven't gone away and she still struggles with wanting to be understood and fearing that people simply can't understand what she went through, no matter what. She's making small steps towards resolving those issues, and while in Route she will have a better environment for doing so, it's still a process that's going to take some time and care and she'll likely have more than a few setbacks before she manages to really resolve those issues.

First Person Sample: [ for a moment, it's hard to make out anything in the video once the feed clicks on -- the lighting isn't the best and the reason for this becomes clear once things come into better focus -- it's being filmed in the middle of a forest and going by the dull light filtering through the leaves, it's starting to get late into the day -- maybe even close to sunset.
Labrys is sat with her back to one of the trees tree and it's immediately clear by the little frown on her face that she's not very happy. There's a Mareep cuddled up next to her with its head on her lap, bleating worriedly though it quietens as Labrys gently lays her hand atop its head and starts petting. ]
Okay, is this-- it's recordin', yeah? W--well, anyone who's watchin' this, gimme a hand, yeah? Anyone else in this Illex Forest place? Any of ya seen someone comin' outta here, in either direction? I was travllin' with two... um...
[ ... is... 'friends' the right word? 'Companions' was what Elizabeth had called them but that sounds a little stilted. She falls silent for a moment before giving a little shake of her head. ]
I had two people with me an' we were tryin' ta get through this place together. But I look away from a second an' they both just--
[ she makes a little poof gesture with her hands. ]
Poof! Disappeared, without sayin' a word! So if anyone sees 'em, tell 'em to come find me, okay?
[ there's a screech from bird somewhere in the trees above and Labrys jumps, almost jarring Kirarin off her lap. Her head snaps up and she peers up into the branches, paling visibly -- she swallows hard and when she looks back to the camera, she's no longer frowning but her lips are twisted and she's looking more than a little creeped out. ]
And if either of ya are actually watchin' this, come find me, okay?!
O--or you'll get a knuckle sandwich!
Third Person Sample: It's a warm, sunny afternoon on the outskirts of Azalea Town and Labrys lets herself think for a moment that the day might come to a close without some kind of catastrophe occurring. She's plopped herself down on the grass with Kirarin huddled up against her, dozing lightly in the sunlight and it seems like everything's as calm and serene as can be. She lets out a little sigh, gently untangling a knot from Kirarin's wool--
-- and then the next thing she knows, there's a very familiar yelp from behind her that gets swallowed up by echoes and she looks up from her own Pokemon just in time to see Adachi going headfirst into the Slowpoke Well and Uni flinging herself in after him.
Oh hell.
Her immediate reaction as she scrambles to her feet is naught but panic. Of course she'd be the only one left to deal with this -- Sho had already taken off on his own the second they'd stepped into the town... and to be honest, it's not like he would've been that much help anyway (unless what she wanted was a terrible well pun).
Already half-convinced that their party is permanently cut down to two, she makes beeline for the well -- or at least attempts to before she stands on one of her own shoelaces and lands right on her face when she topples over. Pain explodes up through her nose when it collides with the ground and she hears more than feels herself let out a low yelp of surprise. The noise and the fuss seems to have jarred Kirarin out of her sleep and, letting out a worried bleat, the Mareep nuzzles at her trainer's face. Labrys lets out a low groan, pushing herself up onto her knees, rubbing her stinging nose.
"M'okay," she mutters, gently ruffling the tuft of wool between Kirarin's horns with her free hands. "S'Adachi-san ya should be worryin' about."
She's a little shaky as she stands up, pausing to tuck her loose shoelace into her shoe, lest she trip again, and sets off for the well a little more carefully this time, picking her steps with a little more precision than would usually be called for.
Even with all the care she's taking, her legs still go a little wobbly as she plants her hands on the sides of the well and leans as far over as she dares, but it's no good -- all she can see is blackness and she feels herself starting to panic even more. There's no way of telling how deep it is from here -- Adachi might be pretty tough (if the beating he took from Sho was any indication) but a long fall like that, especially if he hit his head on the way down...
Her stomach does something very unpleasant at the thought of him lying down there in the cold and the dark, hurt (or worse) and Labrys sucks in a deep breath.
"Adachi-saaaaaan!" she bellows into the well, but the only response she gets is echoes -- and she can't tell if it's her own voice she's hearing or his. The lack of any audible response finally sets fire to the powderkeg of fear in her stomach and she practically jitters away from the well, hopping worriedly from one foot to the other.
Her first instinct is to jump in after him, but her skinned knees sting just enough to remind her of why that's not a good idea. It's still surreal for their to be soft, squishy parts where she's grown used to expecting solid metal and at times like this, it's downright inconvenient.
She dithers for a moment longer, before turning and taking off towards Azalea Town with Kirarin bounding along at her heels and blissfully unaware of the ladder reaching down into the yawning mouth of the well.
"C'mon, Kirarin!" she says. "We gotta go find some help!"
